Prof Jean Bourhis MD, PhD has been chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at the Institute Gustave Roussy (Villejuif, France) between 2002 and 2012. Between 2012 and 2025, Prof J. Bourhis Chaired the Radiation Oncology Department in Lausanne University hospital. He is now Professor emeritus t Lausanne University.


His clinical activity has been focused on Head and Neck Oncology and he was principal investigator of more than 15 large scale randomized trials. He coordinated several international collaborative meta-analyses in head and neck oncology, the contributions of which have been recognised worldwide. He is also co-founder and current Executive Director and Chief Medical Officer of the GORTEC, a very active group in head and neck oncology.


In parallel, Prof Bourhis has been for 25 years Director of a laboratory dedicated to Experimental and Translational Research in Radiation Oncology. He pioneered the clinical translation of FLASH therapy, a new and promising form of radiation therapy.


He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers and received more than 20 international awards.


Pr Bourhis is also the past President of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and of the Swiss Radiation Oncology Society (SASRO).
