Derek is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist + Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre since Jan 2011 with sub speciality interests in Upper GI and Head/Neck. His main research interests are in technical radiotherapy in Upper GI malignancy and systemic therapy trials in Head/Neck cancers. He chairs the North Glasgow Head/Neck MDT. He is the clinical lead for the regional oligometastatic SABR service.

He has a number of current research grants including the development of autosegmentation software to aid target definition in head/neck cancer radiotherapy planning with MRI and a recently awarded Pancreatic Cancer UK (PCUK) grant to explore the correlation of hypoxic imaging, using PET Fluromisonidazole (F-MISO), with pathological specimens in patients undergoing neoadjuvant (chemo) radiotherapy for borderline resectable pancreatic cancer.

He is the Clinical Chief Investigator for the PRIMUS 002 trial focusing on biomarker and liquid biopsy development in the neoadjuvant setting in Pancreatic Cancer. This study is one of the first two in the PRECISION-PANC platform. He is PI for a number of previous and ongoing trials of systemic therapy in head/neck cancer which has lead to extensive experience with novel agents including Immuno-Oncology therapy in this setting.
